Spring 2025

The Astrup Family Foundation is proud to celebrate more than a decade of philanthropy and purpose-driven giving. Founded in 2014, the year Leonard Astrup passed away, the Foundation was born out of a desire to honor both Leonard and Corrine Astrup’s legacy—a legacy rooted in community, service, generosity and love.  Since then, our foundation has grown sixfold.

Corrine Astrup, our beloved mother and grandmother, served on the Foundation’s board until her passing in 2019. She loved nothing more than watching three generations of our family gather around the table to talk about how we could make a difference—especially in the towns and cities where Astrup pharmacies have served communities since 1952.

Today, the Astrup Family Foundation board is composed of seven family members from two generations. Since our founding, 11 different family members have served on the Board of Directors, each bringing a unique perspective and shared commitment to our values.  Our foundation continues to be led by Susan Astrup Lundquist, the youngest of Len and Corrine’s 4 children.  Together we’ve supported over 180 nonprofit organizations and awarded more than $4.7 million in grants.   Through this giving we are confident that we are making a big difference in the lives of more children, individuals and families in need—far more impact than we may ever know.  By the end of 2025 the foundation will have awarded well over $5 million dollars.

While we have built relationships with nonprofits throughout Minnesota and beyond, our primary focus remains on southern Minnesota—the region where our family business, now 72 years strong, first took root. We often partner with Astrup Companies (Sterling Pharmacies and other operating entities) in our giving, particularly in support of two of our signature causes:  Best Christmas Ever and the Alzheimer’s Association.

Our giving reflects the Foundation’s five core values:

  • Family
  • Christian Faith
  • Education
  • Healthcare
  • Strengthening Communities in which we serve

We are especially proud of the work we continue to do in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease—a cause deeply personal to our family. Each year, the extended Astrup family comes together for the Alzheimer’s Gala and the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, honoring those affected by Alzheimer’s and other dementias and raising funds for continued research and support. We also host a family tradition each Christmas Eve: a silent auction benefiting a nonprofit selected by a family vote.

The Astrup family continues to grow—Leonard and Corrine’s nine grandchildren now have 15 children of their own, ranging in age from 1 to 10. With the next generation already learning about giving and service, the future of the Astrup Family Foundation looks bright.  The Astrup Family Foundation is well positioned to be around for many generations to come.

We remain committed to carrying forward the values that inspired our parents and grandparents and look forward to many more years of giving back and making a difference.
